Every year, on December 25 a great number of people in the USA celebrate one of the biggest holidays of the year - Christmas. The day celebrates Jesus Christ's birth.
There are a lot of traditions associated with Christmas. One of them is decorating the Christmas tree and putting up lights both in the place you live and outside. Another one is cooking a very special dinner for your family and friends, which could, for example, be a roast turkey with vegetables and sauces and a rich dessert. However, one of the things everyone is looking forward to is GIFTS. We all love receiving them and this is a chance for everyone to ask Santa to bring you something special.
At your workplace, however (or the place where you study) you can't give a gift to everyone, as it can be very pricey and in big companies, it is nearly impossible. So, in the USA we have a great Christmas tradition called "Secret Santa". Co-workers or fellow students randomly draw the name of another person from the group and they will have to give a gift to this person only. Sometimes they are assigned to a person in some other way. No one should find out who is giving the gift to them, that is why the person is called "Secret Santa". Usually, the price of the gift is discussed in advance so that nobody goes above the limit.
If you want to get a good gift, here's some advice to follow: do not go over the price limit, buy something practical, ask people around or do a bit of research about the person (using social networks, for instance) to find out what he/she likes and of course, keep it appropriate.
