Course Description

TOEFL PREPARATION

Students will receive training on how to successfully negotiate the format, content areas and experience of taking the TOEFL Test.  Students will focus on the core skills for the exams, including listening, speaking, vocabulary development, reading and essay writing. Students will also learn general test-taking strategies applicable to a wide range of exams at the university level.  Practice tests and sample questions will give students insight into their strengths and weaknesses and instructors will provide feedback and strategies for improvement.  A minimum of 24 hours of out-of-class work will be required for this course and may include vocabulary study, memorization and practice, assigned readings, sentence, paragraph or essay writing, grammar assignments, textbook or handout exercises and other practical English usage exercises.
Prerequisite: ESL 061 or corresponding score on placement test
IMPORTANT FACTS:
All students will be given a language test, to assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and how well they can understand and speak English
Minimum level - High-Intermediate
A Certificate of Achievement awarded to each student upon completion.
The classes are 50 minutes each.

Understand the basic structure of all sections of the TOEFL iBT Test.
Recognize different question types for all sections of the TOEFL iBT Test.
Apply strategies for individual question types.
Quickly read short academic texts for understanding of the general ideas of the text.
Take detailed notes when listening to academic lectures and conversations.
Quickly prepare well organized spoken responses to opinion questions and questions that ask for the summary of material.
Write summaries of written and verbal materials.
Write well organized compare and contrast, informative, and persuasive essays.
Recognize and use a wide variety of new vocabulary words.
